Rookie trainer chases another first with life-changing horse

After Saturday, Donaldson-Aitken is looking to get the Welcome to the Show to the March 7 All-Star Mile at Flemington, which offers 10 spots through the fan vote.

“I always thought the All Star Mile would be interesting,” he said.

“He’s got a name that gets people’s attention, so we might get some votes. Every time he’s gone around he’s been priced higher than I think he should have been, so a few people have won money on him. I’d love to put him on that.”

“Craig Newitt, when he rode him last time, said he thought he was a horse that could reach stakes level, so we’ll go through our grades but not jump out too early.

Donaldson-Aitken, a horse breaker and educator with deep roots in racing, was inspired in part by the Welcometotheshow program to take out a license and add the profession to his education business.

“It wasn’t always necessarily the plan,” he said of becoming a coach.

“A good client of mine pushed me to get my trainer’s license and I had a couple of horses I wanted to sell and he was the horse I picked and took to the 2024 Ready To Run sale and he ended up going through.

“So to be able to take him to the races or any other horse to race and kick it up was very appealing to me as well.

“I sent him to my friend for his first couple of starts, then when I got my license things opened up and as fate would have it, he was my first winner, my first metro winner and now we were going interstate.
