The Buffalo Bills believe Matt Prater can handle Sunday’s wild card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The team did not promote veteran Matthew Wright from the practice squad on Saturday. Wright was considered the backup plan for Prater after the kicker re-aggravated his right quad injury in the Bills’ win over the New York Jets.
With Prater ready, the Bills promoted defensive end Andre Jones Jr. and ran Frank Gore Jr. from his training unit.
Jones was picked up three times during the regular season. He blitzed defensively and contributed on special teams during his promotions. Jones could be part of the rotation off the edge behind Joey Bosa, Greg Rousseau and AJ Epenesa on Sunday.
Gore has not been promoted this season and will likely be a depth option at running back if Ty Johnson is unable to play. Johnson is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. The veteran could test the injury on Sunday before the match.
In addition to their two promotions from the practice squad, Buffalo also signed linebacker Baylon Spector to the 53-man roster. The Bills made room for Spector by placing wide receiver Joshua Palmer on injured reserve. Palmer was listed as questionable on Friday, but was downgraded Saturday before being placed on injured reserve.
Palmer’s first season in Buffalo was a huge disappointment. The receiver signed a three-year, $29 million deal with Buffalo this offseason and was expected to be one of Josh Allen’s top weapons. A nagging injury and ineffective play limited the veteran to just 22 catches for 303 yards and no touchdowns.
