Russia and Brazil form a partnership to extract rare minerals

The Russian nuclear agency Rosatom and the Brazilian company Núcleo Brasil Energia Participações (NBEPar) agreed to create a joint company for the extraction and processing of critically important minerals in Brazil.

According to a statement from Rosatom, Uranium One Group, integrated into the Russian state-owned company’s TENEX business group, and NBEPar signed an agreement to found Nadina Minerals, aimed at developing projects for prospecting, extracting and processing strategic raw materials.

As part of the partnership, the new entity will seek to obtain licenses, carry out geological prospecting work and create modern units for the processing of metals essential to the development of high-technology sectors.

The signing took place during the Nuclear Summit 2026 international forum, held in Rio de Janeiro on March 23-24.

Rosatom also recalled the long experience of nuclear cooperation with Brazil, namely in the supply of enriched nuclear fuel and the conversion of Brazilian uranium.

Rare minerals, such as lithium, are a set of chemical elements essential for high-technology production.

Russia has reserves of rare minerals and rare earths estimated at around 12 million tons, including lithium, cobalt and nickel, essential for the energy transition due to their essential role in the production of batteries, magnets and turbines.

Brazil, on the other hand, has the second largest rare earth reserves in the world, with around 21 million tons, representing approximately 23% of global reserves.
