Yesterday, Sunday, Russian forces attacked a coal mine in southeastern Ukraine and another energy site in the north near the Russian border, in a new escalation of attacks on the Ukrainian energy network, coinciding with the killing of two people in a drone attack in the Russian Belgorod region.
The private Ukrainian energy company DTEK said that Russian forces launched an attack on a mine in the Dnepropetrovsk region.
The company added that 192 workers were able to be safely brought to the surface without any injuries, noting that this is the fourth Russian attack in two months on coal mining operations in Ukraine.
In turn, the regional energy company in the northern border region of Chernihiv said that the attack there caused severe damage and cut off electricity to 55,000 users.
She added that emergency crews will restore power to the area as soon as the situation is safe.
Russian attacks in the past few weeks have focused on the Ukrainian power grid and other energy sites.
Power was cut off in many areas last week, following an attack earlier this month that cut off electricity to more than a million consumers.
Drone attack on Belgorod
In Belgorod, Russia, a drone attack early Monday morning resulted in the death of two people and the injury of another, according to what the governor of this region neighboring Ukraine said.
The governor of the region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on Telegram, “Two civilians were killed in the village of Yasny Zori after an explosives drone was dropped on an agricultural project,” adding that another civilian was injured.
Since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war three and a half years ago, Russia has launched drones and missiles into Ukraine on an almost daily basis, while Kiev regularly responds by striking Russian territory, especially energy infrastructure.
