Interest in the term “incel” in Mexico has registered abrupt growth in recent days, according to data from Google Trends. Between March 18 and 23, consultations remained practically non-existent; However, starting in the early hours of the 23rd, the indicator reached its highest point and remained above the weekly average.
This type of spike usually coincides with events of high media impact, which suggests a direct relationship between digital conversation and recent violent events.
WHAT DOES “INCEL” MEAN AND WHY DOES IT CREATE CONCERN?
The term “incel,” short for “involuntary celibate,” describes people who identify as incapable of establishing emotional or sexual relationships. Although the concept itself does not imply violence, some online communities have led to spaces where discourses of resentment, misogyny and social exclusion proliferate.
At the international level, these expressions have been linked in certain cases to digital radicalization and violent attacks, which has raised alarms among specialists in security and social behavior.
THE ATTACK IN MICHOACÁN THAT DETONATED THE TREND
The spike in searches coincides with the coverage of the attack that occurred on March 24 at the Antón Makarenko High School, in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. A 15-year-old teenager entered the campus armed with an AR-15 type rifle and murdered two teachers who were in the administrative area.
The State Prosecutor’s Office reported that the attacker fired at least 14 shots. The victims were identified as María del Rosario Sagrero Chávez and Tatiana Madrigal Bedolla.
PREVIOUS SIGNALS AND NETWORK ACTIVITY
Hours before the attack, the young man published content on social networks where he anticipated his intentions. In the images and videos he was seen dressed in black, showing the weapon and accompanying the material with messages such as “Today is the day.”
The publications included explicit references to “incel” culture, as well as mentions of previous armed attacks and criminal figures, which reinforces the hypothesis of a possible influence of violent digital content on their behavior.
RESPONSE OF THE EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY
The attack occurred between 7:30 and 7:40 in the morning. After the first shots, students and campus staff intervened to subdue the aggressor, managing to disarm him before the authorities arrived.
This reaction was decisive in avoiding a greater number of victims, as confirmed by ministerial authorities.
RESEARCH AND GAPS TO CLARIFY
The authorities are investigating the origin of the weapon – a 5.56 caliber rifle for exclusive military use – and possible responsibilities in its custody. Psychological and toxicological analyzes are also carried out on the aggressor, in addition to reviewing his family environment and digital activity.
To date, there are no official reports of bullying or disciplinary records, which raises questions about the factors that triggered the attack.
BETWEEN TRENDS AND REALITY: A PENDING DISCUSSION
The case shows how digital phenomena can be amplified after violent events, but it also poses a greater challenge: understanding the roots of youth violence beyond labels or trends.
The increase in searches for “incel” not only reflects curiosity, but also a social need to understand complex dynamics that involve isolation, consumption of extreme content, and access to weapons.
Without a comprehensive analysis, the risk is to reduce the problem to a viral term, leaving aside structural factors that remain unresolved.
