Seguro convenes State Council on Security and Defense in April

The President of the Republic, António José Seguro, convened his first Council of State for April 17, which will focus on security and defense, as had already been announced during the campaign.

“The President of the Republic convened the Council of State for the next April 17th, at 3pm, at the Palácio de Belém, with the theme ‘security and defense’, can be read on the website of the Presidency of the Republic.

This State Council takes place after the first Open Insurance Presidency, which will take place between April 6th and 10th.

In the debate for the second round of the presidential elections, Seguro had said that, if he were elected, the first State Council he would convene would be to “debate the issue of security and defense”, and he also said he wanted to discuss the topic with the military leaders and listen to the parties to “maintain the national consensus”.

The socialist considered that “Europe and Portugal have to reinforce their strategic autonomy” in this area to have “better, more efficient means” to protect themselves and defended anti-corruption plans for the investment that will be made.

The Council of State is made up of members who are inherent to the positions they hold or have held and of members appointed by the President of the Republic and elected by the Assembly of the Republic. Currently, there is still no consensus in the AR regarding the names to be nominated for this advisory body for the President.
