Senior hits career high as Copenhagen boys basketball tops LaFargeville

Copenhagen boys basketball went through the season without one of its top playmakers, a senior Jacob Lawlee.

Lawlee suffered a hand injury early in the campaign. But Golden Knights coach Logan Spaulding hopes the senior will be back soon.

Despite Lawlee’s absence, players like the taller guard Logan L’Huilier took on a bigger role.

On Wednesday, L’Huilier put on a show. The senior scored a career-high 41 points in Copenhagen’s 77-37 win over LaFargeville.

L’Huilier also had 10 rebounds for a double-double, recorded two steals, a block and was 11-of-16 from the free throw line.

“He attacked the basketball aggressively every possession,” Spaulding said. “He played very well tonight.

L’Huilier is in his second year of university. At the time, Spaulding said the senior was “growing a lot physically and mentally.”

“There are many years in the game,” Spaulding added. “He’s taken his time to get better. He’s a slasher and he can stand up.”

Bryce Spauldingnephew of coach Spaulding, had a team-high 28 points, four rebounds, five assists, six steals and a block for Copenhagen.

The coach noted that Bryce took some of the pressure off L’Huilier.

“He’s an all-around player,” Coach Spaulding said.

Leland Jordal added five assists and four steals Charlie Short provided eight rebounds.

“We went and played pretty well,” Spaulding said. “Our defense was stifling, especially tonight.

The Golden Knights, now 8-2 on the season, head home on an undefeated four-game road trip. Copenhagen hosts Alexandria Bay on Friday at 7 p.m

The Red Knights (0-9) face DeRuyter on Saturday at 3 p.m.
