Get ready. Snow is on the way.
A significant winter storm will hit the New York area Sunday through Monday, with forecasters predicting 10 to 20 inches of snow in most areas.
The storm will move across the region from the southwest to the northeast beginning Sunday morning, quickly intensifying to light to heavy snow. The most significant accumulations are expected Sunday afternoon through Sunday night, when snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour.

The Hunter is forecast to receive the heaviest snowfall, with 18 to 24 inches expected by Monday evening. Syracuse, Binghamton and Albany are expected to see 12 to 18 inches, while Watertown and Western New York could get 8 to 12 inches.
The long-lasting nature of the storm means travel conditions will worsen throughout Sunday and remain hazardous into Monday.

Central New York
Total snow accumulation between 12 and 18 inches, with the highest amounts expected south of Syracuse.
Snow is expected to reach the I-90 corridor by mid-morning Sunday and continue steadily through the afternoon into Sunday evening, with locally heavy snow in some areas.
Southern Tier
Widespread snowfall of 12 to 18 inches. The storm will begin gradually, with light snow falling before daybreak, and accumulation rates will remain below one inch per hour through Sunday morning. Conditions are expected to intensify as the day progresses.
The heaviest snowfall is forecast for Sunday afternoon through Sunday night, especially in the evening hours when snowfall will peak.
Tug Hill
Storm totals Sunday through Monday night will be in the range of 8 to 14 inches.
Areas east of Lake Ontario can expect the heaviest accumulation from late Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning.
Moderate to strong lake effect is likely southeast and east of Lake Ontario Monday night into Tuesday.
Region of the capital
Total snow accumulation between 12 and 18 inches. The worst-hit areas, including the eastern Catskills, Berkshires, southern Greens and Mid Hudson Valley, could see up to 24 inches of snow.
Sunday morning will start mostly dry with a chance of light snow south of the capital region before midday. Snow will then spread quickly across the forecast area during the afternoon and early evening and will mark the beginning of travel issues.
Snowfall rates are expected to reach one to two inches per hour at times, especially Sunday afternoon through Sunday night.
Western New York
Total accumulations of 8 to 14 inches across the region. Heavy snow is expected Sunday night, with snow on the lake continuing into Monday. The snow will spread north across the region during the first half of Sunday, quickly intensifying to light to heavy within an hour to two of its onset.
Not all areas will experience the same accumulation. Buffalo, Niagara Falls and the shores of Lake Erie will likely receive totals near the lower end of the 8- to 14-inch range as these areas sit on the western edge of the system.
