Strong storm in Greece leaves one dead

A man died near Athens on Thursday as a three-day storm hit Greece with hurricane-force winds, causing flooding and transportation disruptions.

The fire department said the man in his 50s was found under a vehicle in Nea Makri, a rural area northeast of Athens.

Firefighters received nearly 500 emergency calls in the Athens metropolitan area, including more than 30 rescue requests.

Authorities issued emergency warnings and closed schools in and around the capital, as well as other parts of the country.

Most of Greece’s ferries, a major means of transportation connecting the country’s islands, were confined to ports on Wednesday.

The state weather service EMY forecast “severe weather” for most of the country on Thursday, “with prolonged and intense rain and thunderstorms, and possibly localized hail.”

The storm is expected to subside on Friday.

Several flights to Crete were diverted on Wednesday due to an African dust storm that blanketed the island.
