The night sky is currently offering a rare spectacle: two comets, Swan and Lemmon, are visible at the same time, attracting the attention of astronomers and sky watchers. Comet Swan, officially known as C/2025 R2, made a surprise appearance in the sky in September, without prior notice. Its sudden visibility is due to it coming from the direction of the sun, which previously made it difficult to detect.

Comet Swan, whose name derives from the instrument used to discover it, can be found in the southwest in the evening. You can observe it particularly well with binoculars. The comet is about 30 million kilometers from Earth and the current conditions with weak moonlight provide ideal conditions for observation. The best period to see Swan is between October 28th and 31st.

Comet Lemmon orbits parallel to Swan in the sky. This comet is an old acquaintance that was visible 1,300 years ago and will not return for another 1,400 years. Lemmon is the brightest comet of the year and could even be visible to the naked eye provided you are far enough away from urban light sources. This rare opportunity should not be missed.

In order to optimally photograph the comets, it is recommended to set the camera to long exposure. In this way, the tail of the comet can be captured impressively. The chances of clear visibility are particularly good in eastern and southeastern Germany, while the west could struggle with clouds. These celestial events not only provide a visual spectacle, but also an opportunity to learn more about the dynamics and orbits of comets.
