Syracuse football transfer flips Ole Miss commitment (report)

Syracuse, NY – Former South Carolina tight end Michael Smith has flipped his commitment from Syracuse to Mississippi. 247 Sports.

Smith reportedly committed to Syracuse on Jan. 4 after decommitting from South Carolina in October. News of Smith’s flip comes one day after Syracuse landed Western Kentucky’s Noah Meyers.

Syracuse is tasked with replacing its starting tight end for the second straight season as Dan Villari prepares for the NFL Draft.

Smith was once a sought-after recruit. He was a four-star recruit in high school and started seven times for the Gamecocks as a true freshman. After missing spring practice in 2025 due to injury, he lost his starting spot and left the program.

Smith was rated as a three-star recruit and would be Syracuse’s sixth scholarship in 2026.

Ole Miss seems to share a similar thought process as Syracuse. The Rebels have already acquired the Orange’s top two wide receivers from the 2025 season. Pete Golding’s staff has now moved from one of Syracuse’s positions of need.
