Syracuse has issued a safety warning for the storm, which could bring up to 18 inches of snow

Syracuse, NY – Syracuse issued a snow safety warning Friday night ahead of a winter storm that is expected to dump up to 18 inches of snow on the city starting Sunday.

Forecasters are predicting 12 to 18 inches of snow Sunday through Monday, along with extreme cold and freezing temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees below zero.

The city’s Department of Public Works warned Monday’s commute could be affected as crews work to clear roads throughout the storm.

Plows first clear high-volume roads, emergency routes and hills to maintain access for emergency vehicles.

Side streets will be plowed once the main routes are cleared and the snowfall slows or stops, officials said.

City officials are warning residents to prepare for dangerous driving conditions.

The city is asking that people limit travel if possible and follow the alternate parking regulations so the plows can clean the streets efficiently. Police said they will be ticketing and towing vehicles that violate parking rules.

Property owners are required to clear snow from sidewalks along their properties and around nearby fire hydrants. The Syracuse Fire Department is asking residents to clear a three-foot area around the hydrants and create a path to them.

During snow storms, the city will focus on parking enforcement on designated priority streets in the Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest neighborhoods where on-street parking and narrow roadways can make plowing difficult.

Seasonal odd-even parking restrictions will also be enforced on several downtown blocks, including portions of Erie Boulevard East, East Water Street, South Warren Street, Montgomery Street, Madison Street, and East and West Jefferson Street. Signs have been posted notifying of opening hours and restrictions.

Residents can follow the progress using the city’s live feed snow plow map and present snow-related concerns Cityline using the SYRCityline app or by calling 315-448-CITY (2489). In an emergency, call 911.
