The tax burden increased to 35.4% in 2025, compared to 35.2% recorded in the previous year, according to the first notification of 2026 regarding the Excessive Deficit Procedure released this Thursday, March 26, by IBGE.
This indicator corresponds to the relationship between tax revenues and GDP and, according to these data, public administration tax revenues increased by 6.7% in nominal terms, reaching 108.7 billion euros.
The evolution of tax revenues “reflected the growth in economic activity, with nominal GDP increasing 5.9% (1.9% in volume)”, explained the statistics office. Given the sharper increase in nominal growth in tax collection and contributions than in GDP, the tax burden increased by 0.2 percentage points.
