Tencent launches ClawBot on WeChat: OpenClaw AI revolutionizes interactions

Chinese technology giant Tencent announced the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) agents based on OpenClaw into the WeChat messaging application, in a new step in the expansion of these systems in China.

The company reported, in a statement released on Sunday, the launch of the ‘ClawBot’ add-on, which allows users to connect OpenClaw to WeChat and operate the agent through conversations, similar to a conventional interaction.

OpenClaw is an open source program that connects language models to a computer to perform actions on the system, such as managing files, sending email or interacting with applications using natural language instructions.

In recent weeks, the tool has gained popularity among Chinese programmers, where it is known as “lobster” due to its icon, leading to rapid development of tools and local adaptations.

According to the local press, the WeChat add-on allows, among other functions, to summarize conversations, process extensive documents, generate reports or automate tasks on personal computers through commands sent from the cell phone.

WeChat has more than 1,300 million users worldwide, most of them in China.

The announcement comes in a context of growing competition between large Chinese technology companies such as Baidu and Alibaba, which have also recently introduced their own AI agent platforms, in a race for leadership in an emerging segment.

The rapid development of these systems has been accompanied by official warnings from entities such as the Chinese Ministry of State Security, which warned about the risks associated with elevated permissions that could facilitate access to sensitive data or remote control of devices.

This evolution is part of the accelerated growth of AI in China, with models developed by companies such as Baidu, Alibaba, DeepSeek or Tencent itself, which have capabilities comparable to those of North American systems, often at lower costs, although doubts persist about their expansion due to censorship by authorities.
