The impact of the remains of an Iranian missile causes a leak of hazardous materials in an industrial area in southern Israel

The impact of the remains of an Iranian missile in a chemical industry area in southern Israel this Sunday caused leaks of dangerous materials, which Israel’s firefighters are working to contain, the force announced in a statement.

“Firefighters are working directly at the leak points to contain and seal the damaged containers, while carrying out continuous surveillance operations,” announced this emergency body, which shared images of the intense fire that broke out in one of the factories in the Neot Hovav area, in the Negev desert.

The Israeli Army considers that the impact is from the remains of the interception of an Iranian missile, although it is unknown at the moment if they were fragments that still had an explosive charge.

Neot Hovav is home to various chemical industries and hazardous waste management plants, such as Ecosol or the state-owned ESC.

“Three teams specialized in chemical weapons and surveillance forces from the Beersheba station were sent to the scene, which began to evaluate the level of danger and the concentrations of substances in the affected area,” the Firefighters’ statement continues.

Firefighters are also working to cool the tanks near the impact area to prevent the fire from expanding or exploding. They also use air squadrons to contribute to extinguishing the fire.

Only one person has been slightly injured in the attack, according to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronothwhich summons the emergency services.

Firefighters requested the evacuation of the affected plant and neighboring industries, calling on them to seek refuge in protected buildings until they complete their work.

“Firefighters maintain assessment operations in the area until any risk concerns to the public or the environment are ruled out,” the statement concludes.
