The news followed, the controversy ensued – with the precious help of Chega, because then – Mário Centeno did not comment, as he told Diário de Notícias, and Álvaro Santos Pereira got a headache. The former governor of the Bank of Portugal retired from the institution with the right to a full pension, before turning 60, but which, according to jurists and experts, is nothing illegal, especially because Centeno already has enough service time to be able to do so under what the law allows.
Of course, we can question the timing
However, it is necessary to clarify and that is why Álvaro Santos Pereira will go to Parliament so that the deputies can ask him all the doubts that have arisen. And well, after all, that’s what the people’s representatives are for in the house of democracy.
What is still curious, however, are the adjectives that over the last few days have been used to describe the salary – or, now, the pension – earned by Mário Centeno, as governor of the central bank. My favorite was “whiny”. Now, to be honest, Mário Centeno received the same salary as several other European colleagues, according to the average that can be calculated using public data. The governor of the Bank of France, for example, receives up to double the salary (the basic salary is R$310,000 gross per year, but generally exceeds R$500,000, thanks to a series of benefits).
