Military sources in the joint force allied with the Sudanese army announced that they had repelled a large-scale ground attack launched by the Rapid Support Forces on the city of El Fasher, North Darfur, western Sudan.
The sources told Al Jazeera that the army and the joint force responded to a ground attack launched by the Rapid Support Forces from 3 main axes in an attempt to penetrate the military defenses.
The Rapid Support ground attack was accompanied by intense artillery shelling that targeted several residential neighborhoods and centers to shelter displaced people inside the city that has been besieged since May 2024.
The source indicated that the army forces and the joint force were able to inflict “heavy” losses on the attacking forces in lives and equipment.
The Sudanese government and local and international organizations accuse the Rapid Support of launching repeated attacks on residential areas in El Fasher and the displaced camps around it.
The Rapid Support Forces have been besieging El Fasher since May 2024, and despite their repeated attacks, they have failed to break the defenses of the Sixth Infantry Division of the Sudanese army, which is defending the city.
Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been fighting a war that has resulted in the deaths of more than 20,000 people and the displacement and asylum of about 15 million, according to the United Nations and local authorities.
