DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP).— The fragile ceasefire in Iran remains under tension as diplomatic and military movements continue in the region.
The vice president of the United States, JD Vancetraveled yesterday Friday to Pakistan to hold talks with Iranian officials, in an attempt to move towards a broader agreement to end the war, although multiple obstacles remain.
The negotiations face strict conditions from Tehran, which demands the cessation of the Israeli attacks in Lebanon before starting the dialogue. At the same time, Washington sees Iran as having limited room for pressure, focused primarily on its ability to restrict maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil trade.
In parallel, violence continues in the region. Kuwait reported drone attacks attributed to Iran and its allies, although the Revolutionary Guard denied responsibility. These episodes reflect the persistence of indirect actions that complicate any attempt at stabilization.
Despite this context, preparations for dialogue are still underway. Delegations from both countries moved to Islamabad with political, military and technical teams, although Iran warned that it will only negotiate if prior conditions are met, such as progress in agreements already proposed.
Among those pending points are the implementation of a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of blocked Iranian assets, elements that Tehran considers essential before starting formal talks with Washington.
The negotiations between Israel and Lebanon They still move forward, with plans to start direct talks in Washington. The goal would be to disarm Hezbollah and establish more stable relations, although the continuity of Israeli attacks threatens to sabotage the process.
The fighting has taken a devastating toll, especially in Lebanon, where recent bombings have caused hundreds of deaths and mass destruction.
The civilian population faces severe material losses, amid massive displacement and a growing humanitarian crisis.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical point in the conflict. Iranian control over this route has drastically reduced maritime traffic and caused a significant increase in oil prices, generating global impacts on international markets and the economy.
In the political sphere, the United States insists on limiting the Iranian nuclear program and eliminating its capabilities to develop atomic weapons. However, Iran maintains that its program is for peaceful purposes, which keeps deep differences between the two sides open and makes a lasting agreement difficult.
The conflict has left thousands dead in several countries and has involved international actors, including the use of Iranian drones in other scenarios. This shows the regional expansion of the confrontation, as well as the geopolitical complexity that surrounds any attempt at a definitive solution.
