Therese depression. “Extreme localized wind phenomena” are expected

Due to depression Therese, the weather will worsen from this Wednesday, March 18th, with heavy rain, sea disturbances and gusts of wind that could reach 70 km/h, according to forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The effects of this new meteorological depression have already started to be felt today, Tuesday, and are expected to last until Saturday, with the greatest impact in the Center and South of mainland Portugal.

“In its circulation, the formation of organized lines of instability is expected that will tend to advance from south to north over the continent’s territory, and which will have a greater impact on the Central and Southern regions”, explains IPMA.

Rain, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms, is expected this Wednesday, “localized extreme wind phenomena cannot be excluded”, the institute said in a statement.

According to IPMA, “the districts where there should be greater persistence of precipitation will be those on the coast south of Cape Mondego and those in the interior south of Serra da Estrela, which coincide with those in which there is greater probability of heavy precipitation occurring”, namely on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

As regards the wind, “will tend to temporarily increase in intensity on the coast south of Cape Carvoeiro/Mondego, and in the highlands, particularly in the Center and South, sometimes with gusts of up to 70 km/h”.
