In its most recent issue of the Consumer Review, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) revealed which is the best sponge for washing dishes, after analyzing 45 products available on the market.

This tool, vital for removing dirt from kitchen dishes, can become a source of bacteria if its materials are not of quality.

What did Profeco analyze about dishwashing sponges?

According to Profeco, the study included 31 fibers with a sponge and 14 normal fibers or with a sponge center. In total, 8 tests were carried out in which aspects such as wear resistance and even the veracity of its antibacterial activity were measured.

Each product was evaluated with technical and practical criteria that simulated daily use, for example:

  • Commercial information and net content.
  • Scratch and wear resistance evaluation.
  • Total absorption capacity.
  • Antibacterial activity.
  • Finishes and physical characteristics.

This review aimed to check if brands really deliver what they promise on their packaging.

What are the best sponges for washing dishes?

After several tests, Profeco reported that only some brands achieved the “Excellent” rating for their performance, durability and quality of materials, among which are:

Ke Price (fiber with sponge, 4 pieces for $40): Recognized for its high absorption, resistance and for not scratching delicate surfaces.

Chedraui (all-purpose sponge, $14 each): It stood out for its good structure and performance in continuous washing.

Fibrotón and Ecoclean by Fregón ($22 per unit): with outstanding results in resistance and cleaning tests.

On the other hand, brands such as Scotch-Brite Extrema, Great Value sponge fiber and Corazzi Arcobaleno failed to pass the tests, especially those related to the veracity of their antibacterial power.

Profeco explained that, although some are advertised as “antibacterial”, in reality they do not contain agents that inhibit microorganisms, which could turn them into a source of contamination if they are not replaced regularly.

How to choose a quality dishwashing sponge?

Choosing the right sponge can make the difference between a hygienic kitchen or a source of bacteria on dishes and even food.

According to the Profeco report, fibers should be selected depending on the type of surface:

Black or green: for extreme dirt or metal utensils.

Red or gray: for moderate cleaning.

Blue or white: For delicate surfaces such as glasses or ceramics.

Most people believe that soaking it in a soapy solution keeps it clean; However, this practice can deform it and encourage the proliferation of bacteria.

Therefore, the agency recommends rinsing the sponges and letting them dry completely after each use. And replace them every 2 or 3 weeks.

So the next time you go shopping for a sponge, remember that you are not just choosing a product, but the level of cleanliness your kitchen will have.
