Today, Wednesday, the International Court of Justice will issue its ruling on whether Israel violated international law by imposing a blockade that lasted for several months on humanitarian aid heading to the Gaza Strip.
The judges at the United Nations’ highest judicial body will also provide an assessment of the Israeli attacks that targeted United Nations employees and facilities in the Gaza Strip.
The court is expected to issue a non-binding legal advisory opinion, but it may increase international pressure on Israel to cooperate with the United Nations and allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza.
This will be the court’s third decision regarding Israel’s actions since the outbreak of the aggression on Gaza more than two years ago. In July of last year, the court in The Hague ruled that Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories is illegal.
Earlier, the court issued a ruling in the genocide case in which it ordered Israel to take all necessary measures to prevent the commission of genocide in Gaza.
The advisory opinion request came from the United Nations General Assembly, where the resolution will also include the issue of whether Israel is obligated to cooperate with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
South Africa lawsuit continues
A few days ago, the South African government confirmed that it was continuing its lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing the crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip, despite the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian factions.
This position reflects Pretoria’s insistence that legal accountability does not fall once military operations stop, but rather remains necessary to ensure justice for the Palestinians.
In December 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of committing acts amounting to genocide against civilians in Gaza.
The court later issued interim measures demanding that Israel take urgent steps to protect the population and ensure humanitarian access.
