The 14-year-old boy accused of killing his mother, councilor of the Chamber of Vagos Susana Gravato, began to be tried this Wednesday, March 25, at the Family and Minors Court of Aveiro, having been giving statements, a judicial source reported.
The minor is being tried behind closed doors within the scope of an Educational Guardianship Process initiated due to the commission of facts that substantiate a crime of qualified homicide.
In a statement sent to the Lusa agency, the presiding judge of the District of Aveiro, Jorge Bispo, said that the production of evidence began with the provision of statements by the minor, who wanted to do so, lasting throughout the morning.
“As it was not possible to hear the witnesses called for that period, the work was reorganized, moving these witnesses to the afternoon and part of the afternoon witnesses to tomorrow. [quinta-feira]”, says the same note.
The session was interrupted at around 1:00 pm for a lunch break and resumed in the afternoon.
According to the presiding judge, the minor’s defense requested clarifications from the child psychiatrist and psychologist who prepared the child psychiatrist and psychology reports attached to the case file, which was granted by the court.
The trial takes place behind closed doors, as publicity has been excluded, which means that the hearings take place without the presence of the public or the media, except for the reading of the decision, which will be public. The young man’s father can attend the hearing, as he is a minor.
The young man, who is serving a precautionary custody order in a closed educational center, is being judged by a collective court, composed of a career judge and two social judges (citizens, without specific legal training, appointed to assist legal judges in family and juvenile courts).
The Public Prosecutor’s Office requested the application of the educational protective measure of hospitalization in an educational center to the young man, which corresponds to the most serious measure.
The case dates back to October 21, 2025, when Susana Gravato was hit by a gunshot, while she was inside her home, in Gafanha da Vagueira, in the municipality of Vagos, in the district of Aveiro.
