US President Donald Trump asked Congress to increase the defense budget by almost 50% for 2027, rising to 1.5 billion dollars (1.3 billion euros), according to documents released this Friday, April 3, by the White House.
The proposal, if approved by congressmen, would lead to United States (US) military spending jumping by around one billion dollars (867 billion euros) this year to 1.5 billion dollars in 2027.
The proposed value it would be a record for defense spending in the recent history of the world’s largest poweraccording to the France-Presse news agency.
In addition to proposing an increase in defense, the executive led by Donald Trump proposes to reduce non-military spending by 10%.
The North American newspaper The New York Times reported that these reductions could lead to a cut of around 73 billion dollars (63.3 billion euros) in various agencies in the countryincluding the elimination of some programs related to climate, housing and education.
Even without this increase, the United States has the largest defense budget in the world.
The Peter G. Peterson Foundation identified the countries with the highest military spending in 2024, and the US budget was larger than the combined budgets of the nine countries: China, Russia, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, France and Japan.
Donald Trump’s proposal, which highlights the executive’s priorities, does not have the force of law, with Congress, responsible for discussing federal spending, being free to reject the budget proposal.
