US President Donald Trump fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem this Thursday (5 March), following growing criticism of her leadership in the department, including in handling immigration enforcement and responding to disasters.
Trump, who said he would nominate Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma in his place, made the announcement on social media two days after Noem was questioned on Capitol Hill by members of the Republican Party and also the Democratic Party.
Trump said he will appoint Noem as “Special Envoy for the Protection of the Americas”, a new security initiative that, according to the US head of state, will focus on the Western Hemisphere.
