US President Donald Trump has fired Attorney General Pam Bondi, in a decision that reflects growing tensions within his administration. The announcement was made through his Truth Social account, after several days of internal deliberations in the White House.
Bondi will be replaced on an interim basis by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, while her permanent replacement is defined.
DISAGREEMENTS AND POLITICAL PRESSURES
Bondi’s departure was preceded by disagreements with the president, who expressed his dissatisfaction with the handling of key issues within the Department of Justice. Among the points of friction, the management of files related to Jeffrey Epstein and the absence of forceful judicial processes against political opponents stand out.
According to American media reports, Trump held a tense meeting with Bondi, described as “difficult,” in which he directly informed her that his tenure in office was about to end.
CONTROVERSIAL INVESTIGATIONS
In the days before his dismissal, Bondi attempted to advance investigations aligned with presidential priorities. Among them, the case of former CIA director John Brennan, for allegedly lying to Congress about Russian interference in the 2016 elections.
However, prosecutors in Miami warned that the case lacked strength. Which showed tensions between technical criteria and political pressures.
Likewise, the Justice Department brought charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. But both processes were dismissed by a judge, weakening the legal strategy promoted by the White House.
A RELIEF AMID UNCERTAINTY
Although Trump publicly praised Bondi, describing her as “a wonderful person,” close sources indicate that the president considered that he failed to execute his political vision in the judicial field.
Lee Zeldin, current administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, is mentioned as a possible permanent replacement, although the White House is evaluating other alternatives.
Blanche’s interim appointment opens a transition period marked by uncertainty about the direction of the Department of Justice and the balance between judicial independence and political agenda.
