The American president will travel to Beijing on May 14th and 15th, on an official visit postponed due to the United States’ conflict with Iran, the White House spokeswoman announced this Wednesday, March 25th.
“The long-awaited meeting of the President [Donald] Trump with the President [chinês]Xi [Jinping]in China will now take place in Beijing on May 14th and 15th”said Karoline Leavitt at a press conference.
Asked by journalists whether the date had been set taking into account a possible end to the conflict with Iran, the White House spokeswoman suggested yes.
“We always estimated that the war would last approximately four to six weeks, you can do the math”he said, addressing a journalist, adding that there was a conversation between Trump and Xi, who understood the reasons for the postponement.
The visit, which was scheduled for the end of March or beginning of April, was postponed at the request of Donald Trump, who said he was keen to be in the US to follow US military operations against Iran.
Last week, the Republican President said he planned to visit China in “five or six weeks”.
“We have excellent working relationships with China, so we’re going there in five or six weeks,” Trump told reporters at the White House on March 17.
“I want to be here [em Washington] because of the war [no Médio Oriente]. I feel like I need to be here,” he said, adding that he asked China to postpone the visit for about a month.
If carried out, this will be Trump’s second visit to the Asian giant, after the one made in 2017, during the first presidential term (2017-2021).
The two leaders last met in October last year, in South Korea.
