US President Donald Trump on Monday doubted the possibility of China invading Taiwan, praising the existing relations between him and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, whom he will meet later this month.
In response to his question about a previous US Defense Department assessment that concluded that in 2027, Beijing would try to control Taiwan, the self-governing island, Trump said, “I think things will go well with China. China does not want to do that.”
Regarding what Xi is planning for Taiwan, Trump said when he received Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese today at the White House, “That does not mean that it is not the apple of his eye, because it may be, but I do not see anything happening.”
Without explicitly declaring that he would order the use of force to defend Taiwan, Trump said that China realizes that the United States “is the largest military power in the world by far and we have the best at every level, and no one is going to mess with that, and I do not see that happening at all with President Xi, and I think we will get along very well regarding Taiwan and others.”
Trump will hold his first meeting with Xi in his second presidential term during a visit by the two presidents to South Korea later this month to attend the Asia-Pacific Summit.
Trump said that his priority is “to reach a fair trade agreement with China, and I want to treat China well,” praising the “great” relations that exist between him and his Chinese counterpart. But he refused to answer a question about whether the United States would abandon support for Taiwan as part of an agreement with Xi.
It is noteworthy that the United States has recognized Beijing’s authorities at the expense of Taipei since 1979, and Beijing considers Taiwan a Chinese province that it has not been able to unify with the rest of its territory since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.
Under American law, the United States must supply Taiwan with weapons to defend itself, but Washington deliberately maintains ambiguity regarding the use of force to defend the island.
Former US President Joe Biden repeatedly indicated that he would order the US military to intervene if China launched an attack on Taiwan.
