The UN General Assembly declared on Wednesday the African slave trade like ““the most serious crime against humanity”a cause defended by Ghanawhich hopes to pave the way toward healing and possible reparations.

The resolution was adopted to applause with 123 votes in favor, three against (United States, Israel, Argentina) and 52 abstentions (including the United Kingdom and the Member States of the European Union).

The text declared “trafficking in enslaved Africans and the reified and racialized enslavement of Africans as the most serious crime against humanity.”
He also highlighted the legacy of slavery through “the persistence of racial discrimination and neocolonialism” in today’s society.
In addition, it focused on the escalation of the phenomenon, its duration, brutality and systematic nature, as well as the consequences that are still visible today.
“It was a crime against humanity that attacked the very core of the human condition, destroyed families and devastated communities”said António Guterres, UN Secretary General.
He added that it should “work for truth, justice and reparation.”
Ghanaian President John Mahama attended the United Nations headquarters to support the vote. Mahama is one of the leading advocates of slavery reparations measures in the African Union.
“The adoption of this resolution serves as a guarantee against oblivion”said the African leader.
