The Fayetteville-Manlius Board of Education has hired a new superintendent who most recently led the district in Massachusetts.
The board named Magda Parvey as the next superintendent. The appointment is effective from March 1.
The vote was 8 to 1, with board member Marissa Mims voting against the appointment. She didn’t say why.
Parvey’s salary and contract details were not immediately available.
Parvey is currently the superintendent of schools in Andover, Massachusetts, where she will lead the district starting in 2021.
Parvey comes from a district slightly larger than FM, which has about 4,700 students and nearly 700 employees.
Andover Public Schools has about 5,500 students and nearly 900 staff and typically scores well above state test averages.
At Andover, at least two-thirds of grades 3 through 8 were proficient in math over the past three years, according to data from Massachusetts. Statewide, it’s only 41%, according to state data. Andover’s most recent graduation rate is 96%.
During her time at Andover, Parvey and her teachers union repeatedly butted heads over contracts, morale, high school scheduling, and work-hour requirements. It was reported by the website andovermanews.com. in 2023 union held a five-day break due to a contract dispute.
Parvey also worked in the New Rochelle school district in Westchester County while another school administrator was charged with change 212 grades for 32 pupils. The district appointed Parvey to take charge of the troubled situation in 2016, according to lohud.com. The other administrator, the high school principal, was eventually fired.
Parvey also worked in districts in Connecticut and North Carolina.
Current FM Superintendent Craig Tice announced in September 2024 that he would retire during that school year.
Tice has been superintendent of FM since July 2015. Prior to that, he was superintendent in the Marcellus School District.
Tice’s annual salary when appointed was $192,000. His annual salary in 2025 was $263,576, according to SeeThroughNY, a salary database.
