US and Israeli war against Iran is “illegal, absurd and cruel”. “Absolute disaster”, says Pedro Sánchez

The Spanish Prime Minister referred this Wednesday, March 25, to the joint US and Israeli operation against Iran as “an absolute disaster”.

Pedro Sánchez reaffirmed in the Spanish parliament Madrid’s position against the conflict in the Middle East, noting that there are already “almost 2,000 confirmed deaths, more than four million people displaced in Iran and Lebanon”, in addition to “a serious contraction in tourism, maritime trade and global air traffic, and a drastic increase in the price of hydrocarbons, raw materials essential for the proper functioning of the global economy and also for food security”.

Before the deputies, recalled that, in 2003, José María Aznar, then prime minister, “dragged Spain into the madness of the Iraq war”. Now, Sánchez said, “the scenario is much worse, with a much wider and deeper potential for impact.”

He spoke about the effects of the war in Spain, in addition to the increase in fuel prices, referring, for example, to the impact on the main index of the Spanish Stock Exchange, the Ibex35, indicating that “Spanish companies lost more than 100 billion euros in just one month, almost 5 billion euros per day in this conflict”. “And all for what?” he asked. “To undermine international law, destabilize the Middle East, reignite conflicts in Iraq and Lebanon and bury Gaza under the rubble of oblivion and indifference”, lamented Pedro Sánchez.

“What we can be sure of is that this conflict will not result in higher wages, nor more affordable housing, nor better public services. And that is the real tragedy”he stated.

He stressed that “the last thing the world needed was another war.” “And in this case, an illegal, absurd and cruel war that takes us away from our economic, social and environmental objectives and people’s priorities”, he considered.

Remember that Madrid did not authorize the US to use Spanish bases for operations in the war against Iran, a position criticized by Donald Trump. “We are a sovereign country that does not want to participate in illegal wars,” argued Sánchez.
