US authorizes delivery of Russian oil to India amid sanctions

The United States on Thursday authorized the delivery of Russian oil under sanctions to India for a month, at a time when the conflict in the Middle East directly affects supplies to New Delhi.

According to a document published by the US Treasury Department, the authorization will be valid until the end of April 3, 2026.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on the social network X that the exception was granted to “allow oil to continue to supply the world market.”

“This temporary measure will not bring significant financial benefits to the Russian Government, as it only authorizes transactions relating to oil already blocked at sea,” he added.

The sale to India “will alleviate the pressure caused by Iran’s attempt to hijack global energy”, he added.

The Treasury Department also clarified that the authorization does not extend to oil originating from Iran.

The United States authorities, together with the European Union and the G7 countries, have gradually implemented, since 2022, several packages of sanctions against the Russian oil sector in order to reduce Moscow’s ability to finance the war in Ukraine.

However, India continued and even increased purchases of Russian crude oil, sold below market value, becoming one of the top destinations after China.
