After a lengthy legal dispute, the US cult beer Bud is returning to the German market. The world’s largest brewing company AB Inbev has announced that it will reintroduce lager beer in Germany under the name Anheuser-Busch Bud. Sales will start at a supermarket chain, with other retailers and bars expected to follow in 2026. This decision follows growing demand for international lagers in Germany, which AB Inbev now wants to capitalize on to strengthen its market position.
The history of Bud beer dates back to 1876, when German-born brewers Eberhard Anheuser and Adolphus Busch began brewing their lager in the United States. Today it is distributed in more than 80 countries worldwide. In Germany, however, sales were restricted for a long time due to a legal dispute with the Bitburger Brewery. The Federal Court of Justice ruled in 2001 that the American Budweiser beer could not be sold under the name American Bud in Germany because of the risk of confusion with the older German brand Bit.
However, the beer may be sold under the name Anheuser Busch Bud, as the 1st BGH Civil Senate determined. This decision now opened the way for the reintroduction of beer in Germany. AB Inbev, which also owns brands such as Becks, Hasseröder and Spaten, sees Bud’s return as an opportunity to further tap into the highly competitive German beer market. The group plans to brew the beer in the European Union to meet local market requirements.
However, the legal battle over the Bud brand is not the only one that Anheuser-Busch has waged in Europe. There were also disputes over the Budweiser brand with the Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar. The European Court of Justice ruled in 2006 that there was no likelihood of confusion between the Bit and Bud brands, paving the way for the current market launch. Bud’s return to the German market could also have an impact on pricing in the beer sector, as international brands often follow different pricing models than local breweries.
