The president of Chega stated this Saturday that Portugal has a “historic opportunity” to review the Constitution and break with what he considers to be a “permanent blockade” exercised by the Constitutional Court, arguing that the process should move forward “later this year”.
In a speech addressed to the party’s mayors, at Chega’s municipal days, which take place in Santarém, Chega’s president, André Ventura, stated that “it doesn’t make sense” for institutions such as the Constitutional Court to continue, as he said, “to block changes”.
“If everything is unconstitutional, then it is the Constitution that is wrong,” he said.
The leader of Chega insisted that the constitutional review “is not against any party, it is for the country”, and asked the PSD to assume “the historic responsibility” of participating in the process.
“There is only one reason to block this review: the PSD’s permanent addiction to placing itself under the Socialist Party”, he accused, reiterating that the party intends to move forward with the constitutional review process in the Assembly by the end of the year.
Ventura also stated that the Liberal Initiative (IL) and PSD, together with Chega, ensure the “necessary two thirds” in parliament to move forward with changes to the Constitution, highlighting that the three parties share ideas, namely on the market economy, immigration, investment and efficiency of public administration.
On Friday, the president of Chega committed to starting the constitutional review process by the end of the year.
The leader of Chega, who spoke about a report from Expresso that reported that there would be a right-wing alignment for a possible constitutional review, recalled the party’s commitment to “advance with a constitutional review to increase penalties for serious crimes, to remove socialism from the Constitution, to allow for a new economic model”.
Today, the president of Chega also took the opportunity to accuse the PS of exercising “absolute dominance” over State institutions over the last 50 years.
“The Socialist Party managed to dominate, manipulate and control institutions for 50 years. This must end”, he declared.
Addressing the mayors present, the Chega leader highlighted that the party intends to “transform Portugal”, ensuring that Chega voters “did not vote for everything to stay the same”. “It was to confront the Socialist Party and make the changes that need to be made,” he said.
Ventura also dedicated part of the intervention to the agricultural sector, considering it “essential” for the country’s future and regretting that Portugal is increasingly dependent on abroad.
“A country that does not have a rural world, agriculture or primary sector is a country without a future”, he stated.
