Vilnius Airport, the capital of Lithuania, reopened on Sunday morning, October 5, after being forced to end the activities on Saturday night following a security alert.
According to the operator’s statement, “around 22:16 [20:16 em Lisboa] We received an alert about a possible series of balloons to fly toward Vilnius Airport. To ensure air safety, the decision was to implement temporary restrictions. Airspace was reopened on Sunday morning at 4:50 am [02:50 em Lisboa]”.
The stoppage resulted in 30 canceled flights and about six thousand affected passengers, with the operator to predict that more delays could be recorded throughout the day.
This incident occurred a few hours after Munich airport in Germany was forced to end due to suspected drone flights over its land. It was the second episode of the genre recorded at the same week.
German police are still investigating both cases, but drone sighting at European airports has marked the last few weeks and Russia has been pointed out as the origin of these incidents, with Kremlin consecutively denying their involvement.
Still in Germany, a set of drones in the skies of the state of Schleswig-Holstein was spotted in the north. The German government declared at the time that it intended to authorize the Armed Forces to slaughter these devices. The same happened in Belgium, near the German border.
On September 22, Copenhagen airport ended air traffic for about four hours for the same reason.
