“I changed my (putting) grip a week and a half ago, so it was good to see the results right away.
“That was pretty much the anxiety I had. I didn’t know how the greens were going to go, and it went well.”
Day sank a 37-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th island green before playing his final hole of the day to settle near the top of the crowded leaderboard.
“The irons felt great, the short game was good and I was putting really nicely,” Day said.
“I need to work on the driver a little bit, some drives were a little off, but overall I feel pretty solid.
Scheffler looms large as he begins a year where he could join Tiger Woods in winning five consecutive US PGA Player of the Year awards.
“You have to approach it mentally like you have to make some birdies,” Scheffler said.
“(But) when you start forcing things, you can still get into trouble.
“I mean, it’s still golf, it’s still pretty tough, believe it or not, even if the score is low.
