The Unique Population Registration Code evolves in 2025 towards a biometric format that seeks to become the official identification document for all Mexicans.
Based on a reform to the General Population Law, published last July, the CURP will no longer be just an alphanumeric record to become a comprehensive mandatory identification tool. This will combat identity theft, reduce repetitive procedures and facilitate the location of missing people. What documents are needed to process the CURP Biometrics?
If you wish to process this new identification document, you must present the following official documents:
- Certified and updated birth certificate
- Valid official identification (INE, passport or other valid document)
- Traditional CURP validated by RENAPO
- Proof of address no older than 3 months
- Active email
- In the case of minors, they must be accompanied by a guardian with identification and proof of relationship
- During the process, your biometric data will be collected: fingerprints, photograph, iris scan and electronic signature
It is expected that in 2026 the procedure will be mandatory for the entire population. For those who wish to obtain it, it will be necessary to go in person to the modules enabled with official documents.
Since when can the biometric CURP be processed?
The process began in July 2025 with pilot tests in Veracruz, Mexico City and the State of Mexico and since October 16, the biometric CURP can be officially processed in all states of Mexican territory.
The opening hours in the modules where the procedure can be carried out are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For now, an appointment is required.
How long does the process take and does it cost?
The process is quick and simple. Includes biometric data scanning and document validation. The procedure will be free during the implementation stage, and it is expected that it will remain free of charge in the future.
