The introduction of Meta AI in WhatsApp has raised concerns among many users, especially when it comes to privacy. The Facebook Group’s artificial intelligence, which is behind the blue circle in the app, can theoretically read private and group chats if it is activated by entering “@Meta AI”. This functionality has led to increased security awareness among users.

WhatsApp responded to these concerns by introducing a new feature called “Enhanced Chat Privacy” in April. This feature, found in the settings of individual chats, allows users to prevent Meta AI from being activated. Once this option is activated, chat participants will no longer be able to speak to the AI directly, which applies to both individual and group chats.

Although this measure restricts the direct use of Meta AI, other data sharing options remain. Users should continue to be careful about what they share in their chats, as screenshots and forwarding messages are still possible. Consumer advocates also warn about Meta’s planned use of user data for AI training, which raises additional privacy concerns.

The introduction of Meta AI in Europe came after intensive negotiations with regulators. WhatsApp emphasizes that personal messages are protected by end-to-end encryption by default and Meta AI can only access messages sent directly to it. Nevertheless, skepticism remains high because retrieving data that has once been incorporated into the AI is considered difficult. Experts advise users to remain vigilant and take advantage of new privacy features to protect their privacy.
