Here’s a recent football story via the Associated Press:

PANAMA CITY, Panama (AP) — American-born players Richy Ledezma and Brian Gutiérrez made their debuts and helped Mexico snap a six-game winless streak with a 1-0 win over Panama in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday.

Defender Richard Peralta scored an own goal in the 92nd minute to give Mexico its first win since beating the United States in the Gold Cup final last July.

Ledezma, who was born in Phoenix to Mexican parents, made a one-time trade with FIFA after playing official matches with the United States. He entered the match and played the entire 90 minutes.

Gutierrez, who was born in Berwyn, Illinois, did not have to apply for a country change as he only played friendlies for the USA against Venezuela and Costa Rica in January 2025.

“It was good minutes, I’m taking it step by step and now I’m going to continue to grow,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez, who also started and left the game in the 57th minute, was also on the CONCACAF Nations League roster last March but never made it into the game.

Obed Vargas, who was born in Anchorage, Alaska, was also a starter for Mexico.

“Those three guys who were born in the United States and decided to play for Mexico, and for that reason alone, they deserve my respect,” Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said. “The three have started well, they are children with a future, I am happy.

Vargas, a midfielder, earned his first cap for Mexico’s senior team in October 2024 with a substitute appearance against the United States in a 2–0 victory.
