Workers in the formal sector are looking forward to the end of the year and not precisely because of the upcoming holidays, but because of the fact of receiving the legal benefit, the bonus.
What is it and what is its origin?
As mentioned, the bonus is a legal benefit that workers in the formal sector must receive, that is, it is an annual payment made by employers or companies to their employees.
The bonus has its origin in Romaand dates back to the Celtic people (who lived throughout Europa in the Iron Age) which had a tradition called “eguinad”.
The tradition consisted of exchanging dates and nuts as a sign of satisfaction and wishes of good luck.

“The Latin word that designates the ‘bonus’ is strenna or strena, whose first meaning is omen or prognosis. Then it became accustomed to symbolize the omens in gifts, to wish good at the beginning of the year,” according to the portal of the Government of Mexico.
In Rome this tradition became widespread and even the custom of accompanying with gifts was institutionalized –strenae– good wishes, on the occasion of the holidays New Year and birthdays. Furthermore, they worshiped “Strenia”, the goddess of good health and good luck.

30-day bonus in 2025 in Mexico, will it be possible?
However, in recent days information has circulated about an initiative that proposes that workers in the formal sector receive a minimum bonus of 30 days and not 15 as currently provided.
The initiative was promoted by the then senator of Green Ecologist Party of Mexicoit (PVEM) Napoleón Gómez Urrutia -current secretary general of the Miners Union and president of the International Workers’ Confederation– he February 28, 2024.
At that time the Labor and Social Welfare Commissionchaired by Urrutia, approved a reform to increase the bonus to be paid to workers annually to 30 days of salary.
The then senator argued that since 1970that is, does 55 years has not experienced an increase despite the fact that today Mexican workers work longer hours compared to those in other countries.
However, the initiative is in the freezer since the Congress of the Union has not approved the ‘double bonus’ initiative, so there is no date when it will come into force.

How much would the 30-day bonus be if approved?
Currently, those who receive the minimum wage receive a bonus of 15 days of daily salary, that is, 4 mil 182.
If the initiative is approved and comes into effect, then workers in the formal sector who earn the minimum wage would receive a 30-day bonus, that is, 8 thousand 364 pesos in 2025.
For now, we can only hope that at some point the initiative is taken up in the Congress of the Union and approved so that the bonus is set for at least 30 days.
