Comet "of the nine tails"

The “comet with the tail of the 10 moons” can be observed from Mexico, here we tell you how and when to see it, since it will take 22 thousand years for this phenomenon to happen again.

Mexico City, October 18 (However).- The cometa C/2025 R2 SWAN It is approaching Earth for the first time in 22 thousand years and will be visible in Mexico. Here we tell you when and how to observe this astronomical phenomenon.

When can comet C/2025 R2 SWAN be seen from Mexico?

The comet discovered by amateur astronomer Vladimir Bezuglywho used data from the instrument SWAN of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, for its acronym in English) to find it, it can be seen from Mexico from this Saturday until next Tuesday, October 20.

This comet was discovered only on September 11, 2025 by Vladimir Bezugly, and stands out for the iconic length of its tail, formed by particles of gas and ionized dust, which reaches approximately 5 degrees in the sky. That is, the equivalent of a visual distance of ten full moons placed in a row.

He “10 moon tail comet“, the name by which this star is also known, is considered extremely rare due to the period of time its orbit takes to be seen from Earth, making it a unique experience for those who decide to contemplate it.

Although there are still doubts about the trajectory of the star, it began to orbit near the Earth with greater splendor from today, October 18, after reaching its perihelion on September 12, 2025, approaching 0.5 astronomical units from the Sun.

How to observe the passage of comet C/2025 R2 SWAN from Mexico?

The maximum brightness of the “comet with the tail of the 10 moons” is expected to be nine points, a situation whereby it will not be visible to the human eye. However, those who decide to witness this phenomenon can use a telescope or binoculars to appreciate its trajectory.

Apart from the above, there are scientific portals such as Time And Date that consider the possibility that the comet “breaks the forecasts” and reaches magnitude 6, allowing the “unpredictable” celestial body to be seen without the need for any device.

To observe the passage of the “comet with the tail of the 10 moons” it will be necessary to point your eyes in the opposite direction to the Sun. In this sense, the weather forecast will have to be considered, since the trajectory of the star will be more difficult to see if there is no clear sky or if pollution prevails.

The best time to observe comet C/2025 R2 SWAN in Mexico City (CdMx) will be after 6:33 p.m., when the celestial body reaches 52 degrees above the southwest horizon. Subsequently, the star will gradually descend until it sets around 11:04 p.m., with similar times in the rest of the national territory.
