Marcelo Ebrard indicated that various proposals have been presented to the United States regarding the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum, and they are waiting for the northern neighbor country to issue a response.
Mexico City, October 21 (However).- The head of the Ministry of Economy (SE), Marcelo Ebrard Casaubónassured this Tuesday that there is progress in the 90 percent in the talks regarding the tariffs that USA (EU) could impose on Mexico, a few days before the end of the 90 day period agreed in August between Donald Trump and the President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
“Regarding the 90 days, the period that was given [por Estados Unidos]which is now a few days away, I was in Washington on Thursday and Friday of last week […] I would say that we have very important progress. Practically the elements that we are talking about prior to the review of the treaty [de libre comercio entre México, EU y Canadá, T-MEC]”We have progressed around 90 percent,” Ebrard explained when appearing in the Chamber of Deputies.
Regarding whether Mexico is prepared for an adverse scenario in this negotiation, he assured that it is; However, he explained that the panorama is very different from that of a few months ago, since a consultation is carried out prior to the review of the treaty agreed with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), and with the Canadian authorities, even with the Prime Minister.

“As we are already in that consultation process, what I foresee is that we are going to review the T-MEC. And the treaty, I told the deputies, well it will surely have some changes, but I do not expect them to be substantial, substantial in terms of modifying the entire treaty or its main contents,” he added.
He also referred to tariffs on steel and aluminum, and said that various proposals have been presented to the United States and they are waiting for the northern neighbor country to issue a response.
On the other hand, he commented that there are a series of measures that they are taking such as the proposal of tariff fractions, which will be a matter of discussion, deliberation and, where appropriate, approval or modification of the Chamber of Deputies, and includes steel, steel and aluminum.
The federal official indicated that, on the issue of market diversification, there is also important progress with the European Union and very specific issues are being analyzed with other nations regarding the tariff levels placed on Mexican goods or the sanitary complexities for exporting agricultural products.
Regarding foreign investment, he maintained that the highest level has been registered, since the investment portfolio managed by the Ministry of Economy has 1,776 projects for 297 billion dollars.
“No project has been canceled to date, it includes foreign and national, but rather I have to add other projects, like the one we just announced in Querétaro, it was five billion dollars for data centers for Artificial Intelligence. In other words, Mexico is going to arrive on time for Artificial Intelligence,” he emphasized.
He also added that in November the presence of the CEO of Nvidia is expected and the Mexican language of Artificial Intelligence will be presented. “That is, what I see is a sequence of investment towards Mexico and it will also be towards the development poles,” he noted.
Regarding the 2026 Soccer World Cup, the Secretary stated that this summer fair positions Mexico with an audience that is very difficult to achieve in any other way.
“It almost has no equal, I would say that it is the event that has the most impact, globally speaking. Now, it also has to do with investment. It is closely linked. If we project a positive image, that will have many positive investment results,” he concluded.
