“The essence of democracy is that citizens choose the government; the government does not choose the government,” said the businessman. Claudio X. González Guajardo during his visit yesterday in the city to promote the citizen initiative for electoral reform called “Let’s save democracy.”
This national campaign aims to collect 130,000 signatures, with the aim of stopping what he considers an attempt by the federal government to obtain all power.
“We want it to reach the Mexican Congress and be known, debated and ruled along with the initiative that the president is about to present. Claudia Sheinbaum (Pardo) and Morena in February of next year,” he expressed before a group of citizens in the auditorium of the Olimpo Cultural Center.
The welcome was given by Patricia McCarthy Caballerowho initially presented a video about the “Pink Tide” movement, of which X. González was one of its main promoters.
When speaking, the businessman indicated that at “Marea rosa” It was a movement that emerged in 2022 against the former president’s plans a and b Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Now they are going against plan c; that is, the electoral reform that the president raised and that she plans to present to Congress next February, he said.
After pointing out how the party in power has extended to the legislative and judicial branches, the businessman pointed out that Morena’s people are “very bad at governing, very good at concentrating power.”
“The streets of the country are a pothole, education is broken, health is even worse than education, the economy is stagnant, insecurity is very high, it does not solve anything, but how about how they concentrate power. That is what they are good for,” said the businessman, who as part of his visit to Mérida held a meeting with businessmen and another with the mayor. Cecilia Patron Laviada.
At the meeting in Olympus, he mentioned that the electoral reform is the next round so that the official party remains tied to power and that in the elections, as happened in the 20th century, everyone already knows who is going to win the election.
“It is an authoritarian design,” he stressed.
The activist was ideologically related the Mexican government with the Cuban, Venezuelan, Nicaraguan and Colombian regimes.
“I believe that Mexico has much more capacity to defend itself than Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua from what has happened to those nations. Venezuela went from being the richest Latin American country to now being, along with Haiti, the two poorest.”
“We cannot allow that to happen in our country. And I think we are going to avoid it. That is what the initiative we are presenting to you is about, friends,” he pointed out and then explained the main axes of “Save democracy”: a fair referee, an even playing field, ending cheating, removing organized crime from the elections and ending the botching and overrepresentation.
“If you do not have these five basic elements, then you no longer have a democracy,” he highlighted.
“Article 71 of the Constitution provides for this type of citizen participation, the citizen initiative for constitutional or legal reform. And it says that you need 0.13%; that is, approximately 130,000 signatures for the citizen initiative to be formalized.”
If more than 130,000 signatures are collected, he added, Congress has the obligation to hear the initiative and rule on it.
“And if we present it at the same time as that of President Sheinbaum, they have to be known jointly.”

The deadline for receiving signatures is December 10.
