The approval of extortion at the federal level includes reforms to different legal systems such as the Federal Penal Code, local criminal codes and the Federal Law against organized crime.
Mexico City October 17 (However).- The Legal Counsel of the President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Ernestina Godoy Ramosreported this Friday that it has already been sent to Congress of the Union the initiative for the approval of the crime of extortion at the Federal level and that it pursue profession.
“What is intended is that all states and at the federal level the crime of extortion has the same elements and is prosecuted ex officio by the authorities and it is intended that the presentation of the complaint for its investigation is not necessary,” indicated the Counselor today in the morning conference.
The official stated that the proposal contemplates a penalty that ranges from six to 15 years in prison for the crime of extortion and there will be a series of aggravating factors, which will be when the extortion is for the payment of rent, or when the victims are migrants, for example.

In addition, it also establishes as aggravating factors cases in which the extortionists are public servants or when the crime is committed from a prison.
To achieve the homologation of the crime at the federal level, the initiative includes reforms to different legal systems such as the Federal Penal Code, local criminal codes and the Federal Law against organized crime.
The official indicated that this proposal also includes coordination between authorities with a basic criminal offense, as well as all the elements and provisions for prevention and investigation.
The General Law will unify and contemplate, among other things, the criminal type of extortion, its aggravating factors, the related crimes and its sanctions, and the general objectives of prevention, investigation and mechanisms of effective care for victims, offended persons and witnesses will be met.
Previously, in September, a constitutional reform was approved to allow Congress to legislate on the crime of extortion, previously a power that only local congresses had.
