ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s first tender for battery energy storage system (BESS) on a BOT basis had received strong interest from investors, with a large number of vendors using Chinese batteries, sources with knowledge of he matter said.
Bids ranged from slightly below 2 million rupees to 3 million rupees per MegaWatt per month, the sources said.
The CEB called expressions of interest for 160MW of battery energy systems at multiple locations as build operate own (BOO) projects to stabilize the grid and absorb more renewable energy.
Some locations had got up to 17 bids making the tender very competitive, sources said.
The capacity charge of around 2 million rupees per MegaWatt per month works out to around 17 rupees per kilowatt hour, analysts said.
Around 90 percent or more of the bidders used Chinese batteries. China has seen a technology race for electric batteries, with advanced and low-cost batteries.

Sri Lanka’s Windforce was among the lowest, sources said.
Under the procurement method, financial bids are opened first. Then technical evaluation is conducted to make a final decision on the award.
Earlier on Tuesday punters pushed up Winforce Plc stocks 26 percent to 43.90 rupees per share on speculation that the firm was a strong candidate to win BESS EOIs. However it is not clear what the margin is. (Colombo/Oct14/2025 Up date II)
