Mainland Portugal is now feeling the real early autumnafter days with typical high summer temperatures. Of Saturday to Sundayone sistema frontal will cross the territory, causing widespread rain e drop in maximum temperaturesas explained by the meteorologist Angela Lourençofrom the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
“From today (Friday) we will gradually see a change in the meteorological situation that will be more significant on Sunday. Today is still a day with high temperatures, very similar to those recorded in previous days”, Lourenço told Lusa.
O sistema frontal will bring more intense wind and a drop in maximum temperatures between 5 and 7 °Cwhich can reach up to 9 °C in some northern areas. The minimums should not undergo significant changes. The wind will be strong at times, especially in coastline north of Cabo Carvoeiro and in the highlands.
At the end of next week, the maximum temperatures should be around 23/24 °C in regionshethe central e 19/20 °C in the northconsolidating the arrival of typical autumn weather in Portugal.
Widespread rain
Sunday will be marked by rain practically throughout the territorywith the frontal system crossing the country from north to south. In the regions of Lower Alentejo and Algarverainfall may be less frequent.
During the next week, rain is expected keep upwith drier periods and others in which it may occur throughout the territory. The forecast indicates a higher incidence of precipitation in the north and centeraffecting occasionally the south.
Historically, according to IPMA data (1991-2020), the rainiest regions in Portugal are the mountainous area of the Peneda-Gerês National Park and the Western Group of the Azores (Corvo and Flores).
