The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced early Thursday morning through a publication on his Truth Social platform that Israel and Hamas had signed “the first phase” of the peace agreement in Gaza based on the 20-point proposal presented by the White House. “This means that all hostages will be released very soon and Israel will withdraw its troops to an agreed-upon line as the first step toward a strong, lasting and definitive peace,” Trump explained.
Just a few minutes before the American president’s announcement, the negotiators, meeting in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh, celebrated an agreement that ends two years of war in the Strip, where more than 67,000 Palestinians have died, according to local health authorities.
Hamas will release the remaining hostages in the first 17 hours from the entry into force of the agreement, something that will not occur until Benjamin Netanyahu’s government ratifies the decision.
In the images released by the Egyptian press service, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, appears congratulating the Qatari Prime Minister, Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and the head of the Turkish secret services, Ibrahim Kalin, who signed an agreement that ends the war in the Palestinian enclave two years later. Witkoff had landed on Wednesday morning in Cairo in the company of Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to get the agreement on track.
