Kouri Richins, the writer who published a book about how she overcame the death of her husband, convicted of murdering him

A jury found her responsible for the death of her husband, Eric Richinswhich occurred in March 2022, after just three hours of deliberation. The prosecution maintained that the woman gave him a lethal dose of fentanyl mixed in a drink, causing his death.

The court accepted the evidence of the prosecution, led by the lawyer Clint Bensonand ended up proving the evidence that confirmed the murder of Richins at the hands of his wife four years ago.

Forensic experts determined that the victim had up to five times the lethal dose of this drug. This significant amount reinforced the prosecution’s thesis that it was neither an accident nor habitual consumption.

The fentanyl would have been administered in the form of a cocktail with vodka, ginger and lime. The prosecution maintained during the trial that she prepared the drink herself at home on the night of the events.

The sentence for which the aggressor has been convicted includes crimes of aggravated murder, attempted murder, fraud and forgery. All of these crimes leave the accused facing a possible sentence of between 25 years and life in prison.

The case shocked public opinion. The figure of Richins, mother of a family and author of a book on grief management, contributed to amplifying the media impact.

The contradiction between its public role – focused on emotional support after a loss – and the judicial conclusion has led to a deep debate in American society, due to the striking nature of this story.

A suspicious book

Just a year after this man’s death, his wife published the book Are You With Mewith which she presented herself as a woman trying to overcome her husband’s grief, while at the same time trying to help other people overcome the loss.

The publication tells the story of a child of childhood age, whose father dies, but “stays with him” in a symbolic way, since he maintains an emotional connection with his deceased father, which allows him to cope with his loss.

According to the author herself, the work was intended to help other children to face the loss of a loved one.

This narrative, presented as an intimate and familiar experience, later became one of the most disturbing elements of the case. So just a few weeks later, she was arrested by the authorities as a suspect of murder.

Economic reasons

During the trial, the motive for the crime was always linked to a scenario of serious economic problems as the trigger for this murder. The accused accumulated million-dollar debts due to her real estate business and with this she tried to access her husband’s inheritance.

Apparently, the heritage of Kouri Richins reached 4 million dollarsso his wife, who had a debt of 4 and a half million, considered that ending her husband’s life was the most effective way to solve most of her financial problems.

At the same time, according to the county prosecutor of Summit County, in the state of Utah, Brad Bloodworththis woman was seeing another man, with whom she was already planning a future once she had broken up with her husband.

However, Bloodworth stressed that “she just wanted to get rid of her husband“, but “not your money“.

The defendant kept her eyes on the ground and breathed deeply as the judge read the verdict. After learning of the decision, relatives of both parties left the room between hugs and tears, according to information from AP.

Richins was found guilty not only of murder, but also of other serious crimes, including one count of attempted murder.

According to authorities, weeks earlier she had tried to poison her husband on Valentine’s Day with a sandwich contaminated with fentanylwhich caused him to faint.

The jury also found her guilty of forgery and fraud in claiming death insurance benefits.

The final sentence will be known within seven weeks. This judicial resolution was set for May 13, the date on which her husband would have turned 44 years old.

Only the charge of aggravated murder carries a sentence of between 25 years and life in prison, although the other crimes charged must be added.

For its part, Amy Richinsthe victim’s sister, assured that the family remains “in shock” and that the family will now be able to focus on honoring Eric’s memory, while supporting their children. “We have obtained justice for my brother,” he stressed.
