In reacting to these distinctions, Carlos Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal, highlights that “this recognition reflects the richness of our national assets and the importance of community dynamics, since tourism is only truly competitive when it contributes to balanced development in all regions. The decentralization and valorization of territories, promoting the diversification of the tourist offer and the creation of value throughout the country, is one of the objectives underlying the work that Turismo de Portugal develops. These awards, won by our towns and villages, by highlighting the effort and dedication of local communities in valuing their territories, are therefore always very significant and inspiring.”
Promoted by World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), this initiative distinguishes, worldwide, rural destinations with greater tourism capabilities to assert themselves as engines of economic and social development, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
