Religious leaders, politicians, media professionals, public figures and different experts are among the personalities who signed a manifesto calling for a ban on the creation of artificial superintelligence.
This new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, which not only replicates human capabilities but also surpasses them, has been the target of several criticisms. The manifesto is based on expert testimony to justify the concern.
Mustafá Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft IA, had already expressed reticence about the technology in question: “Until it can be unequivocally proven that it is [segura]we shouldn’t invent it.”
In turn, Mark Beall, former director of Strategy and Policy and AI recommends caution: “Superintelligence without appropriate safeguards can be the ultimate expression of human arrogance — power without moral restraint.”
O manifestoIt was published this Wednesday by the Institute for the Future of Life and at the end of the afternoon had around 19 thousand signatures, which continue to increase, as anyone can sign it.
Technological advances threaten the future of Man
Recent advances in this area have scared experts. According to ForbesOpenAI, owner of ChatGPT, reached an agreement at the beginning of the year with AMD, one of the main producers of AI software, placing the company in the lead in the race to create artificial superintelligence, ahead of Google and xAI.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has warned in the past about the potential problems with this technology: “The development of superintelligence is probably the greatest threat to humanity’s continued existence.” Now he is one of the main investors in the area.
Signatories to the manifesto warn of the problem, demanding that adequate security measures be implemented. “This is not a ban. It is simply a proposal to require action on a technology that could cause human extinction. Is that too much to ask?”, asks Stuart Russell, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Berkeley and director of the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence (CHAI).
