NAt the beginning of next year, two Spaniards will leave their positions in the European institutions they lead. Both positions can serve Mário Centeno. The former governor of the Bank of Portugal (BdP) is appointed vice-presidency of the ECB, replacing Luis De Guindos, and already has some support in Southern Europe, but he still has the presidency of the European Banking Authority (EBA) open, succeeding José Manuel Campa. Between the two positions, Centeno’s CV and desire point more towards the vice-presidency of the ECB, which, however, does not comment, for now, on this possibility. Sources interviewed by Expresso say that the position that would best suit economist and former Finance Minister Mário Centeno would be the vice-presidency of the ECB, given his experience, less linked to banking regulation and more to the areas of macroeconomics, with a special focus on employment. In fact, even as governor of the BdP, his work in the areas of economic forecasts and price stability was much more notable than in banking supervision.
